About Bushfire Risk Assessments
Our Mission
Bushfire Risk Assessments (BRA) mission is to ensure people understand the bushfire risk they are accepting prior to purchasing a property. This will create safer communities and ensure those choosing to live amongst the natural beauty of the Australian bush are more aware and mitigate their bushfire risk. BRA uses practical experience, best practice, academic research and cutting-edge technology to ensure you make informed decisions before buying a property.
Our Purpose
The NSW State Inquiry into the Bushfire Season of 2019/20 and the Royal Commission into fires of the same season highlighted in the future bushfires will be more frequent with greater intensity, and current methods of mitigation and education are becoming increasingly less effective. Bushfire Risk Assessments wants to assist in building future ready resilient communities.
Mat
Mat is a leading bushfire risk and resilience specialist with more than 35 years’ frontline and executive experience, including serving as an Assistant Commissioner with the NSW Rural Fire Service. He previously led statewide development assessment, bushfire‑prone land mapping and risk governance, giving him unmatched insight into planning, compliance and mitigation across the urban–rural interface.
Mat delivers practical, data‑informed advice that helps clients reduce risk, meet regulatory requirements and make confident property decisions. He continues to volunteer with the RFS.
Ben
Ben is the founder of Bushfire Risk Assessments. Having grown up on the urban–rural fringe of Sydney, he has seen firsthand the devastating impact of bushfires, losing neighbours and his family home in two separate bushfires. He began firefighting in 1997.
Ben’s commitment to reducing the impact of bushfires extends beyond frontline response. He has studied bushfire risk extensively, completing an academic thesis focused on managing bushfire risk on the urban–rural fringe.

The combined experience of the team spans more than 70 years of firefighting experience, learning and consulting on bushfires. We live and work across NSW with main service hubs in Sydney, North Coast, South Coast, Southern Highlands and Snowy Mountains.
